Our story

Bruno Rodi

Fate. A four-letter word that is loaded with history, philosophy, timing and destination. For Bruno, fate was an experience that he lived when he discovers Artemano. He found himself falling in love: in equal proportions between the aspects that could be seen with the naked eye, as with the parts that could only be felt by one’s remaining senses.

Intrigued by the foreign culture of a world he had not previously known, Bruno was humbled by the newfound nature that surrounded him. It is in the commercial real estate field that Bruno Rodi made his debut in the business, while at the same time he embarked on furniture manufacturing and created Rodi, “The sofa specialist”, 30 years ago.

Frequently described as the modern Marco Polo, he has visited more than 200 countries and spends most of his time outside Canada, which does not prevent him from remaining active in his business. Focused on nature and recycling, Bruno Rodi discovers Artemano and falls in love with it.

As an exceptional brand, unique by its history and philosophy, Bruno acquires Artemano, confident in the brand’s lasting appeal.

EYAL SHOAM

Sketch pad in hand and inspired by even the most miniscule technicalities, Eyal offers functional and practical integrity to Artemano, the exact qualities that turn vision to reality. Often found travelling to the artisans around the world who are not only partners but friends of Artemano, Eyal shares multiple cups of tea with the locals whilst discussing texture, inspiration, material, lacquer, grain and nature. His passion lays within the fine details:

The flip side of passion is fulfilment. And for Eyal, this comes from the moment an Artemano customer chooses a piece to welcome into their home; their haven from the world. This is the utmost version of a compliment, as the nonverbal translation of that action represents the level a piece can touch another’s life. And it is Eyal’s hand that started the sketch to make this profound change.

Since the birth of Artemano, Eyal’s designs have evolved. Each piece is still inspired and deliberate, and now balance modernity, contemporary and cultural influences. He has added another dimension to the creation process, though: functionality. Functionality in day-to-day use, as well as versatility in different ambiances and spaces. Just as the pieces of a puzzle fit together.

The Spark

WITHIN OUR SPIRIT, LIES OUR PASSIONS.

When two people meet and discover their passions align almost entirely, one can extrapolate the years prior to their friendship to imagine the foundation that almost immediately exists.

When Shimon and Eyal first met, they were at a dinner celebrating a mutual friend. It only took a mere thirty minutes for the commonalities to show that coincidence could not be ignored: both men expressing passions for travel, culture and design. As nature creates sparks, a spark of friendship was created.

In 2004, the two men decided to start working together, and in 2005 this determination came true through the unveiling of Artemano.

Our Philosophy

At Artemano, our philosophy nests fondly in nature. It is from nature that we inspire our creativity: giving spark to decorative treasures that render living spaces balanced, beautiful and artistic. It is also from nature that we humbly accept our materials. By using naturally occurring woods from lands far, far away, we re-frame grains, irregularities and imperfections into radiant works of art stemming from the Earth.

Our Philosophy

NATURE’S ELEMENTS

Elements in harmony. At Artemano, harmony is our guiding premise from the moment our hands begin the sketch of a design to the instant the piece of art contacts our showroom floor. Harmony comes to light when we balance Eastern influence with Western functionality; when we highlight imperfections in naturally occurring woods in a fashion that adds character and whispers stories; when we poise the exotic to feel comfortable, natural. Just as they occur in nature: neither good nor bad, simply being.

Water

By hypnotically flowing in then flowing out, we learn that flexibility and forgiveness are both traits that are ever-changing and necessary. This thoughtfulness is brought in by the tide of our designs as we channel Eastern-influence into our Western-ambiances, understanding the cultural significance and beauty.
Water

Fire

Illuminating dark spaces with intensity, colour and confidence, fire brings a passion that is daring. Like fire, the woods and materials we use to create our pieces do the same. Vibrant and lively, lines and imperfections scar the surfaces and one-of-a-kind grains spark character.
Fire

Air

Filling our lungs and minds with life, air is carefree and abundant. It allows us find balance or stamina depending on the circumstance. Balance can also be found in our ambiance. And it is within this staging that Artemano aims to offer environments and décor that fit together like pieces of a puzzle while providing an overall zen that calms the mind that enjoys the space.
Air

Earth

Upon waking, our feet touch the earth, pulsing a sense of stability from sole to mind. Reliable, vast, even. It is from this solid surface that our craftsmanship is guided. Each piece is handcrafted with a steady and sure sense of quality that is both trustworthy and unfailing. Dependability is both our pride, and our commitment.

Great Beauty, Great Responsibility

To be inspired by nature is to be inspired by beauty. And we are honoured to claim this inspiration as we create functionally beautiful pieces of art that our customers display in their sanctuaries. We use materials that come from the source and we understand and claim responsibility for ensuring the renewal, regeneration and respect for nature’s cycle.

Re-Used

In lands far, far away, there are Indonesian boats, Indian railway sleepers, drift wood or fallen trees from Thailand; all ingredients that are destined to become waste. At Artemano, we take advantage of these materials. We nurture their histories, their stories, their unique characteristics and rather than see them become disposed, we utilize them in our furniture – highlighting their imperfections as beauty.

Eco-responsible

Strong advocates of fair trade, we work with the local governments of the countries we source from to implement sound harvesting methods and operational practices that render minimal impact to the forests. Our commitment includes the requirement that sustainable suppliers become our partners and that they adhere to the strict reforestation guidelines as implemented by their home country. We are all in it together.

Trees4Trees

Trees4Trees is a non-profit foundation established in Indonesia, whom Artemano is proud to partner with. Through the empowering of local communities, Trees4Trees ensures that responsible reforestation occurs using high value seedlings that are distributed to local land owners free of charge. The communities receive related education and training practices to ensure good forestry practices and foster the maximum health of the environment.

For our clients, we provide a WIN number with the purchase of any table which allows them to simulate the planting of a renewed tree.

Organically Beautiful

Although each piece we design and handicraft has a unique recipe, there are a handful of fundamentals that reside in our values which can be seen across our collections. One of those fundamentals is our passion for organic and naturally occurring woods.

These woods represent more than a building material for us. They literally breathe life into our décor, adding strength, colour, environment and mystery in equal proportions. To us, this is the ideal mix for creating organic beauty through our pieces and into your ambiance.

Materials

Rosewood

Rosewood

Our rosewood grows in hand-picked government approved plantations located in Bihar and Bangalore, India. Affectionately named sheesham or sisu, this hardwood is low in density and high in power, with a grain that offers a wave-patterned signature.

Suar

Suar

Nurtured and harvested in Northern Thailand and Indonesia, suar trees have a primary purpose that is nature-serving; to raise the insects from which shellac is spun. These free-spirited trees have free-form limbs which become less productive as the years pass, and it is these limbs that we use to inspire and spin into works of art.

Old Construction Wood

Boatwood

Boatwood

From an aerial perspective, Indonesian shorelines are like connect-the-dot designs. The dots themselves are bubble-gum coloured fishing boats that contentedly bob up-and-down in the water. Having lived full and rewarding lives, the boats are now weathered and conditioned for retirement. By using these boats, we breathe a second-life into them: adding pops of colour and stories of strength to our furniture.

Mango

Mango

Chameleon-like and versatile, mango wood ranges in colours that emit a yellow hue. Although centuries old, mango trees bear fruit for a maximum of 20 years, whilst the loops remain curvaceous and knots remain in-tact beyond this time. Sometimes exposing, and sometimes not, the dotted and granular streaks within. Sourced from India in accordance with the fair-trade rules, our skilled craftsmen ply this earthy material into and within our pieces.

Acacia

Acacia

Whether caramel or mocha in colour, sweetness must not fool the onlooker. The acacia tree is one of the strongest South East Asian woods and commands its raw aura of power accordingly. Stemming from India, we use breakthrough techniques to expose the wood’s natural grain and layer a weathered look that is full of both antiquity and modernity.

From Across the World To Your Home

Partners + Friends

Once strangers, now friends, we are proud to have developed relationships with local suppliers and local artisans in the countries from which we inspire ourselves. These relationships are built on respect for culture, loyalty and integrity to one-another and passion for the craft of design and furniture. Ask us about our network, and with a twinkle in our eye, we will share with you the stories of the artisans and their families; often failing to discuss the actual piece of furniture in question!

Growing Together

For more than fourteen years, we have grown together with our artisans, suppliers and friends, just as the limbs of the formidable trees we utilize in our pieces. Our roots have become strong below the surface, criss-crossing memories while leaving space for growth. It is with great pride that we fondly call this network ours.

CREATING MAGIC BY CHASING UNIQUENESS

At Artemano, we chase the unique by using the world as a playground for culturally-influenced creativity. The byproduct of this search are the functional works of art that we transport from our homes to yours. In perfect combination, we utilize unique and natural materials, we inject cultural influence and design, we master the art of handicraft and woodworking and then we perfectly stage zen through our collections and their complementary accessories. We believe in magic, and we help our customers believe it too.

Attention to Detail

Inspirational, breath-taking, conversation-sparking and quietly confident, are all wishes we strive our pieces to have. But there is one more quality: functionality. With an eye for detail and utility, we ensure that our pieces are well-integrated – that we are meticulous in both design and usefulness. We pay attention to the details so that you can take a step back and enjoy the grander picture.

Creative Beings

Searching for purpose and, simultaneously, searching for means of expression, our suppliers, designers and local artisans are kindred spirits. We are the creative beings, the ones who see the world slightly differently: seeing the angles, the colours and the harmonies in unique ways that beg to be explored. The outcome: creative, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces that sing with creativity when they enter our clients' homes.

Eyal's Design

In a world of mass production and copycats, it’s not easy to offer authenticity and originality. Providing one-of-a-kind products that have been crafted by hand and that hold a piece of history is no simple task. It takes dedication, commitment, passion and a true love for what you do. For us, creating ambiances filled with objects that embody the spirit of their countries of origin is a must. According to co-founder Eyal, who is avidly involved in the sourcing, creation and design of the brand, “researching, studying and understanding the countries we visit so we can best respect and honour their culture, history and way of doing things” is key.

Everything began back in Asia...

Trips to Asia often involve driving for hours in the hopes of unearthing just the right items or at the very least, opening doors to future opportunities. But there are days when everything comes together and, after months of hard work, the sketches come alive before your very eyes and you can finally touch, feel and smell next year’s collection.

By Artemano

Original designs are created here, spun by the hands of our artists, but tested overseas in their ‘enviornments’. By doing so, we ensure the authenticity and the true nature of both material and design. If a piece looks out of place in its natural environment, it does not meet our mandate of bringing the exotic to you.

Our showrooms are our stages, and we offer inspiration and gentle suggestion on a weekly basis as we change the landscape in each and every store. Our goal is to show you just how functional and just how versatile our pieces are, and how this will certainly translate into your space as your own energy is added to them.

LIVE. LOVE. LAUGH. TOGETHER

At Artemano, our passports are well-stamped and our team interacts frequently with suppliers and artisans whose phone numbers are longer than ten digits. But it is our local teams, our in-showroom teams, that bring the magic to you. Every week, their mandate is to change the ambiance, displaying how the only thing constant in life truly is change, and that they embrace that fact completely and wholly. In our stores, we live, love and laugh together, creating an in-store experience that will leave you positive and at peace.
